‘He’s been drugged,’ I said, my hands shaking with anger as I held up the bottle. ‘Jane was the one who took him from the kitchen. He’s been hidden in her van this whole time and she lied that he was on the motorway, because . . . because . . .’

Why had she lied? Why steal Dazzle and then pretend to everyone that he was in grave danger? I didn’t know, but it didn’t make her any less guilty. Not that Margot, Charlotte and Mum looked totally convinced of that.

Jane was pulling a horrified face. I knew she was going to pretend that I’d made the whole thing up.

‘Sid. This has gone too far! I don’t know how you got Dazzle from the motorway into the van, but we need to get him to a vet,’ Jane said, still trying to take charge just like she had for Mum in Margot’s living room.

‘Sid, look!’ Fliss said, her eyes wide as she passed me one of the crisp, new leaflets that had fallen on to the road with Dazzle’s blanket.
